Brian Shaw is Assistant Professor of Music (Music Education) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and Adjunct Assistant Professor (Biostatistics) at the IU School of Public Health. His areas of scholarly interest include assessment and grading, quantitative research methods, measurement and psychometrics, social psychology, and education policy.
Dr. Shaw is the author of the book Music Assessment for Better Ensembles, an assessment and grading resource for music teachers published by Oxford University Press. His work appears in the Journal of Research in Music Education, the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Psychology of Music, The Stata Journal, and Music Educators Journal. He has presented at the National Association for Music Education’s Music Research and Teacher Education and National In-Service Conferences, the Music Education and Multilevel Modeling Special Interest Groups of the American Educational Research Association, the International Research in Music Education conference, the International Symposium on Assessment in Music Education, the International Symposium on the Sociology of Music Education, and the Midwest Clinic.
Previously, Dr. Shaw was a member of the music education faculty at Ohio State University and an award-winning music teacher and administrator in Indiana and Illinois. His bands performed at prestigious events including the Illinois Music Education Conference and Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival, and appeared as a demonstration ensemble at the Midwest Clinic.
